An Olympic-class ocean liner, RMS Titanic was owned by the White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast. He went to New York with 2228 people on board. The number of victims was caused partly by the fact that while satisfying the standards of the time, the ship had enough lifeboats for only 1178 people. A large number of men died due to protocol "women and children first" has been followed.
